What Apple Carplay is?

We get a lot of questions about what Carplay is, what apps I can use, why there is no YouTube app, etc. So we will try to answer them in this article

Apple Carplay

Apple CarPlay is essentially a simplified and more driver-friendly version of the iPhone interface displayed on the car’s screen. It allows you to access a wide range of iPhone functions and features using in-car controls, voice commands or even the touchscreen itself. This reduces driver distraction and provides a safer way to stay connected on the road.

Allowed apps

Apple CarPlay is designed to work with selected apps that enhance your driving experience without compromising safety. Some of the main categories of CarPlay-compatible apps include:

  1. Navigation apps: Apple Maps, Google Maps, Sygic and Waze navigation apps give you directions, real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn information, all displayed on your car’s screen.

  2. Communication apps Phone, Messages and WhatsApp let you make and receive calls, read and dictate text messages and even use voice commands to communicate.

  3. Music apps: You can use music streaming apps like Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and more to enjoy your favourite tunes and playlists on the go.

  4. Podcast apps: Apple Podcasts and third-party podcast apps let you listen to your favourite podcasts on the go.

  5. Messaging apps: WhatsApp and iMessage allow you to send and receive messages using voice commands, making it a safer alternative to texting while driving.

Disallowed apps

However, not all apps are compatible with Apple CarPlay. Some apps with a lot of visual or interactive elements may not work well or may not be available on CarPlay for security reasons. For example:

  1. Video streaming apps: CarPlay is not available for apps such as YouTube and Netflix, which focus on video content, so that drivers are not distracted by video playback.

  2. Games and productivity apps: CarPlay cannot be used for apps that require prolonged interaction, such as games and productivity app suites.

  3. Complex apps: Apps with complex interfaces or requiring a lot of text input are limited to make them comfortable and safe to use while driving.

  4. Social networking apps: Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Are not allowed to prevent the constant use of social networks.
As Apple CarPlay is designed to be an assistive function while driving.

Apple CarPlay has revolutionised the way we stay connected while driving, providing a safe and convenient way to access important iPhone features without taking your eyes off the road. By focusing on essential features like navigation, communication and entertainment, and limiting the use of more distracting apps, CarPlay strikes a balance between technology and safety on the road, making every journey more enjoyable and safer.
